About Us
On April 23, 2003, the charter for Western Academy, Inc. was signed by Dr. Arthur C. Johnson, Superintendent for The School District of Palm Beach County, and officially began its operation as a not-for-profit corporation doing business as Western Academy Charter School. Western Academy was awarded a five year charter and opened its doors on September 2, 2003. Thus began an unbelievable journey into educating and building the minds, bodies and character of every child who steps through our doors.
In 2008, Western Academy was awarded a 15 year renewal contract through 2022.
We currently serve students in Kindergarten through 8th grade and in 2010-2011 we have approximately 360 students enrolled. Located in Royal Palm Beach, we are the only charter school in the western area of Palm Beach County. We serve students who reside in Wellington, Royal Palm Beach, Loxahatchee, Western Lake Worth and Lantana. Western Academy was designed as an innovative alternative to traditional public school education. Our new contract allows us to add Pre-K in future years (TBD).
MISSION:
The school’s mission is to equip all children with the skills necessary for success on both an educational and social level. We believe in addressing the whole child through a multi sensory approach to learning. We believe that both the family and the community are essential participants in the education of children, and that together we can help children become socially adept individuals with self confidence, self respect, compassion and respect for others and their community.
PROGRAMS:
Western Academy Charter School utilizes the CHILD (Changing How Instruction for Learning is Delivered) model of instruction in our K -5th grade classes. This model of instruction utilizes a multi sensory, team teaching method designed to meet the individual needs and goals of each student. It incorporates intensive hands on activities and technology within a variety of academic stations and integrates thematic units, manipulatives and visual, auditory and kinesthetic activities to gain knowledge, learn problem solving skills and enhance creative expression. This model provides an environment of active learning where student collaboration and cooperation is promoted. Student cooperation and collaboration and the use of technology played an important role in the student directed learning.
Our Middle School 6th through 8th grade, utilizes interdisciplinary teams as well as district and state adopted curriculum and incorporates hands-on activities and integrated thematic units with a strong emphasis on technology. We offer Intensive Math and Intensive Reading classes for those students in need of remediation.
Both our elementary and middle school programs meet the Federal No Child Left Behind legislative requirements and the State of Florida "Just Read!" Initiative.
