The Florida Department of Education has designated 82 Palm Beach County schools Five Star Award winners. The Five Star Award is presented annually to those schools that have shown evidence of exemplary community involvement. To qualify, a school must have achieved 100% of the criteria in the categories of business partnerships, family involvement, volunteers, student community service, and school advisory councils.
“To obtain this award, each school must complete a rigorous application process,” said School District Volunteer Coordinator Debi Elfen. “This requires a school-wide effort over the course of the school year to meet all of the criteria. We applaud the tremendous efforts of our schools in winning this prestigious community involvement award.” The Five Star Award is the first award of its kind in the nation and is the highest award given by the Florida Department of Education for community involvement.
Included in the record 82 award winners is Western Academy Charter School, the first charter school in Palm Beach County to receive the Five Star Award. Last year 78 schools were awarded the Five Star designation.
